Short History:

Tourettes was discovered by Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette,

a French neurologist, in an old noblewoman in 1855. Tourettes is
a type of tic disorder.

Diagnosis:

Tourettes is diagnosed when a person has had tics for more than
one year. Tourettes is very easy to confuse with a variety of other tic
disorders. There are two main types of tics which are explained below
in the glog. These normally are their worst from ages seven to twelve.
After those years the tics are still there, but are no where near as severe.

Effects of the Disorder on Normal Life:

How the disorder effects those who have it greatly depends on how severe
the person's case is. Many people with small motor tics are barley effected at all,
while people with coprolalia and other severe tic disorders often offend any one
around them.

Treatment of Tourettes Syndrome:

Most of the people with tourettes do not have severe enough symptoms
to need treatment, but some who have tics that can injure themselves or others
do need treatment. There is no cure for tourettes, just as there is no direct treatment.
However tic suppression drugs such as haloperidol and pimozide are used to control
the more severe cases of tourettes.
